The following letter appeared in the 2022-2024 Annual Report of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. It has been my honor to serve both the Academy and Drexel. The mission of both institutions is to find solutions to the challenges of our time and, more importantly, those we will face.
Dear Academy Friends and Supporters,
As I prepare to step down as Chairperson of the Academy of Natural Sciences and from Drexel University's Board of Trustees on June 30, 2025, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact of our work.
Throughout my career in both for-profit and nonprofit sectors, I've been guided by a simple principle: putting grandchildren ahead of greed — all grandchildren. During my six years at the helm, I have been fortunate to work with a remarkable group of trustees, staff, students, and supporters that model that simple principle every single day across every aspect of their work.
The Academy, despite being the oldest natural history museum in the Americas, has never been more innovative, impactful, or dynamic. Our strategic alliance with Drexel University has amplified our ability to address crucial environmental challenges through world-class research, education, and community engagement. From our invaluable collections and groundbreaking research to our co-created public exhibits and award-winning community programs, we continue to deliver meaningful and measurable impact in an era that desperately needs environmental leadership.
The synergy between the Academy and Drexel has created a powerhouse of discovery and education. Together, we're better positioned than ever to drive positive change, albeit in ways that must be increasingly creative and cost-effective as we face today's challenges.
To my successor and our entire community, your charge is to expand this vital mission. I am confident that with your continued commitment, our work will flourish and expand in new and exciting directions.
I am deeply grateful to the Academy staff, board, and you - our tireless supporters - for the privilege of serving this remarkable institution. While my official role may be ending, my heart remains steadfastly committed to our purpose of being a Force for Nature for generations to come.
Warmly,
Dave Griffith
Chair, Board of Trustees
Trustee, Drexel University
